Great article. Very clear and concise. It would be beneficial to include a link to information on how to dispose of CFL bulbs, as the mercury does present a potential safety and health hazard. I don't think many people are aware of this, because it is rarely mentioned when listing the advantages of CFL bulbs.

This is a terrific post, you are summarized this and actually made it really easy to understand. Would like to see a follow up that discusses whether the new bulbs will require different fixtures or can they work as well in our existing incandescent fixtures and lamps.

I have to agree with you that the term"GREEN" is very vague. I personally think of it as taking small steps towards a bigger picture. A way to help clean up our mess. I met a family in my town who is building a house made from tires. Thats right, tires, like the ones that crowd our landfills.
Its fascinating to me that a house can be erected/decorated out of trash. Its nice to know that there are more options than just granite countertops, marble tile, drywall, etc...Not to mention, easier on the wallet.
Here in austin most of us are moving towards solar panels, attaching barrels to our downspouts to catch the rain, and even flushing out our grey water (sink, bathtub, washer) to our yards..
Simple ways to not being wasteful....

Someone who comes to mind when I hear the term "green" is; http://www.garbagewarrior.com/about.html
He's been building self sustainable homes for 30 years. Truly amazing.
